The Worlds of Green

Production, Global Trade, & Logistics

Production, Global Trade, & Logistics

Food, flowers, and plants from the Netherlands are shipped all over the world. Seventy percent of our production is exported. Flowers go to Russia, pigs’ feet to China, and cucumbers to Germany. At the same time, we import half of our food. Bananas come from Costa Rica, coffee from Ecuador, and spices from Indonesia. Imported nutrients are processed into new products here and then sent abroad.

In this sector, you encounter a variety of production chains: from short to long, and from simple to complicated. Also from soil to mouth, from greenhouse to refrigerator, and from seed to salad. The world of Production, Global Trade, & Logistics is all about safety, sustainability, quality, and creativity.

Production

New production processes and techniques can make this world more efficient and sustainable. The possibilities are endless: from research to technology to implementation. Could you grow mushrooms in shipping containers so they could be harvested on arrival in Hong Kong? Would you like to work as a forklift driver in a greenhouse or a commercial bakery? Or research ways to increase the shelf life of healthy juices? Maybe you’ll adapt high-pressure machines from Canada to the processes we use here. Or even ‘bake’ 3D-printed pies. Could you develop a moving dairy factory for a farm? Or operate a production line where thousands of cookies fly past every minute?

In the Netherlands, we waste 30% of our food and drink. The less waste, the better! For example, think of a flexible dairy factory in which demand on the global market determines what happens to the milk. Today it could be used for cheesemaking, tomorrow it could go in cartons to the supermarket, and the next day its lactose, protein, and milk fat could be sold separately. Would you contribute to that?

Clever technology, a strong network, and smart profits are all part of this world of production, global trade, and logistics

Global trade & logistics

The logistics of the global trade of agriculture and food are very versatile. Will you help to electronically transport tropical fruit from the port of Rotterdam throughout Europe? Or transport ornamental fish from Asia to here? Or have drones deliver sustainably packaged roses? You can participate in major global deals and make sure every link in the chain gets what they are entitled to receive. Could you make deals with health care institutions to put superfood on the menu? Will you make sure that sustainable palm oil from Indonesia reaches the dog food factory on time?
