People & Animals

People & Animals

Animals have long been an important part of our society, culture, and economy. We keep animals as companions, for food production, for education, and for nature conservation. In the world of People & Animals, you can work on creating a good and healthy role for animals in our society.

Animal husbandry

The Dutch agriculture and food sector is one of the most innovative in the world. If you work with cows, pigs, sheep, chickens, or fish in our country, you are an example to the rest of the world. And don't forget horses: equestrian sports are second only to soccer as the sport with the greatest economic value.

Would you like to develop super healthy and sustainable feed for all those animals? Will you become an advisor for agricultural entrepreneurs? Or work on farm robots, short chains, or local fisheries? Do you aspire to create a better image of the sector?

Animal welfare

Animal welfare is receiving a lot of attention around the world. Animal rights and the production of animals as food are increasingly common topics of discussion. Many animals are threatened with extinction, on land and in the water. Would you like to take a stand for those animals in politics, on a farm, or in an animal shelter?

When you work with animals, you contribute to the happiness and health of animals and people

Animals & society

Since the turn of the 21st century, society has been paying close attention to livestock farming. Negative reports about its environmental effects and animal welfare have appeared in the media. Environmentalists make their opinions clear, sometimes by breaking the rules. Problems related to nitrogen are also receiving a lot of attention.

On the other hand, there have also been many positive developments related to livestock farming. The sector is innovative and the Netherlands leads the world in knowledge. Efforts are being made to promote circular agriculture, sustainability, clean air, and biodiversity. Will you help us continue to lead the world in 2050? Will you show society the positive developments in livestock farming?

Caring for animals

Animals bring people a lot of happiness and fun. Pets can also make elderly people feel less lonely. Lots of people also keep ornamental fish, exotic birds, or reptiles as pets. As a veterinarian or veterinary assistant, you could help ensure that owners and pets can enjoy each other for a long time. Or would you like to take care of animals in a pet shop, zoo, or animal shelter? By the way, did you know that some shelters are luxury animal hotels? Or would you like to open a real animal superstore, where everything for animals and owners is under one roof?

Agriculture & technology

There is a lot of room for technology in animal husbandry. Stables can be arranged to improve animal welfare. Technology can also contribute to animal health and better systems on farms. Would you like to develop a new stable system or a scanner to detect diseases? Could you be the key to self-propelled agricultural machinery? Or could you devise a system to remotely fertilize the soil?

Agribusiness

The agricultural sector is one of the largest economic sectors in the Netherlands. In addition to animal husbandry and the production of steaks, chicken wings, sausage, and cheese, the path to consumers must also be healthy and fair. Could you be a farm advisor who offers advice about sustainability to agricultural entrepreneurs? Would you like to ensure that entrepreneurs can sell their products? Or will you delve into the multi-faceted market and think of new ways to make money with animals?
